Fashion Shoot!

I have been at my internship for about two weeks now. I have written two stories and am working on four others. On friday, I helped with a photoshoot for Indiana Minority Business Magazine. It's very difrent than the normal happenings of my internship, so I took some pictures.

We had to tape the bottom of the shoes so that we could return them to the store we borrowed them from

It's interesting the even in journalism you have ot partner with other industries such as fashion, business. Everything is so connected. Its fun to see what goes on to pull everything together.

internship

I have started my internship, by the way. I am working on a story on how african american women feel about body image, as well as an inspiring story about this women who was a foster child with 7 kids and now is a college grad and so are all of her kids. I've only been there two days but its been good so far. Hopefully, some of my sources have gotten back to me from my class and e-mails. I have to stay pretty late on tuesdays and wendsdays. (like from 9:00 till 7:00pm), but i guess thats what journalism is like in the real world.

Social media vrs. traditional journalism

So last week, an old high school friend of mine wen't missing.

The thing is, despite a very brief article on fox's local website, no indy news stations or publications picked up the story. Despite her moms attempts to get the story on the news, no one knew about it.

So her mom used facebook to raise awareness, creating a group where she posted updates on the story and called people out to help. I went out to the meeting at Douglas Park where we all passed out flyers to find Valerie, which i found out about via facebook. I also noticed some post about it on twitter, and I also posted the notice about Valerie missing on my Tumblr. After encouraging some popular blogs to reblog me to raise awareness, the post went viral. it now as a little under 3000 notes, mostly reblogs. When i read the notes i even noticed a lot of people from Indiana and even some who went to val's old school had reblogged it.

I was like... 3000 people have this missing notice posted on their blog and only one news station posted about it.

Social media is pretty amazing.

The start of summer 2011

Hello. i know I haven't posted anything lately. Finals week took its hold on me. But the summer sun and the being away from classes has revitalized the part of me that wants to write for fun. On the plus side, I have an over 3.0 GPA for this semester. And, I designed this really interesting website for my journalism class that I'm quite proud of.

I start my summer internship at The Indianapolis Recorder next week. This blog will probably become about what I learn from that experience, as well as anything else I decide is noteworthy.

My friend Ariel Waldman, who is a photojournalism major and the owner of http://thekiwiphoto.com (check it out!), took "professional photos" for me for my website and just in case I ever need a headshot for anything. These are the ones I am thinking of adding to my website.
